Lansing Concert Band performs a special program to introduce Lansing-area
school children to the instruments of the concert band annually. The "Young
Person's Introduction to the Concert Band" is typically held
at the Wharton Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Michigan
State
University. Through the generous support of
grants from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, this
program
has been free-of-charge
to schools in the past few years. To
help maximize the educational benefit of this program, an extensive study
guide is distributed to participating schools prior to the concert. The
guide, originally developed by professor of education Kathy Roth, provides
concert highlights, pre- and post-concert activities as well as fun facts,
things to listen for, and instruction on concert etiquette and decorum
as well as supplemental materials. The concert program varies from year
to year, but is always tailored to the young audience. The program may
feature student artwork, dancers, videos and slides. A highlight of the
program each year is the introduction to the instruments, where each section
of the band is featured, giving students the opportunity to hear each
instrument color individually. We
are pleased to announce we have commissioned a new work for the Young
Person's Concert for 2008. The music is a theme and variations based
on the tune This Old Man. Noted composer and conductor Dr.
James Colonna has written the work, and will attend this year's concert
and conduct the premier. It promises to be a very exciting opportunity
for your students. The
theme for the 2008 Young Person's Concert
is "Music from Around the World." Music
surrounds us during our daily lives.
Sometimes we are aware of it, sometimes it is more subtle. Our program
will explore the
many places we hear music and some of the reasons why it is so effective.
Students will also have the opportunity to sing along with the band,
and we have some other surprises in store.
The study guide for the program is available here. To register your class for this year's Young Person's Concert, please
