Kenneth G. Bloomquist Prize

The Kenneth G. Bloomquist Prize was established by the Lansing Concert Band in 2011 to recognize and reward an outstanding high school musician in the mid-Michigan area. The award is named in honor of LCB Director Emeritus and former director of bands at Michigan State University, Ken Bloomquist. The $1,000 prize is awarded to the winner, who will also perform with the LCB as a featured soloist on our annual Young Artist's Concert held in the spring (Saturday, April 29, 2017 this year).

Application information

The competition is open to Michigan high school musicians (grades 9–12) enrolled in school during the 2016-17 academic year. Performers of woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments may apply. Applicants must select a work for their instrument which has an available band or wind ensemble accompaniment and must submit an audio recording of their performance of that selection accompanied by piano, band, or orchestra.

Eligibility: We have limited the 2017 competition to students enrolled in the following counties: Allegan, Barry, Branch, Calhoun, Clinton, Eaton, Genesee, Gratiot, Hillsdale, Ingham, ionia, Isabella, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kent, Lenawee, Livingston, Midland, Montcalm, Oakland, Saginaw, Shiawassee and Washtenaw.

Performance with the Lansing Concert Band will be April 29, 2017 in a Lansing-area venue. Deadline for application is February 7, 2017.

Judges’ decisions are final. The winner will be invited to perform their solo selection in concert with the Lansing Concert Band on April 29, 2017. A cash prize of $1,000 will be awarded along with a professional recording of the performance.

Apply via U.S. Mail

  • Download the application form, print a copy and complete it. Please print legibly, particularly your e-mail address.
  • Request a letter of recommendation from a teacher familiar with the student’s musicianship, and include this letter with your application packet.
  • Prepare an unedited cassette or CD recording of you performing your selected work with accompaniment. (A piano accompaniment is acceptable for the application process.) If the work is multi-movement, select the first or last movement; play the entire movement. If the work is through-composed, play the piece in its entirety. (Memorization of the work is preferred, but not required)
  • Include a personal check for the $25 application fee (checks made payable to Lansing Concert Band)

Your completed application packet should include: Completed application form, letter of recommendation, recording of your audition piece and a personal check to cover the application cost.

Your application will not be considered unless the application packet is complete.

Online Application process

Prior to completing the online application form, be certain you have an unedited recording of you performing your selected work with accompaniment (a piano accompaniment is acceptable for the application process). If the work is multi-movement, select the first or last movement; play the entire movement. If the work is through-composed, play the piece in its entirety. Accepted audio formats include: .mp3, .m4a, .wma, .wav, flac, .ogg and .aac formats. The submitted recording should not contain any spoken words or other identifying information.

  • Complete the online application (link appears below). Be certain you include all the required information (indicated by a red askterisk). Near the bottom of the application form is a button which will allow you to upload your audition recording. Shortly after completing the application, you should receive an e-mail message confirming the receipt of your application form and recording. We will also send a follow-up message when we've had the opportunity to verify that the audition file has arrived successfully.
  • Request a letter of recommendation from a teacher familiar with the student’s musicianship, and include this letter with your application packet. The recommendation may also be an e-mail.   • Download the parental/legal guardian consent form (link appears below). Print the form. Sign your name indicating the recording you submitted is yours. Have your parent sign the form indicating they approve of your participation and performance on April 29, if selected.
  • Include a personal check for the $25 application fee (checks made payable to Lansing Concert Band)

Mail the letter of recommendation (unless submitted as an e-mail), the completed permission form, and personal check to cover the application cost. Your online application not be considered until we receive this additional information.
